Interface to York Chillers
|
|
Case Study:
|
|
Project specifications for a new manufacturing facility called for an Andover Controls system
for space temperature control as well as control of a central energy plant.
As part of the central plant requirements, control and monitoring points from each of two
centrifugal chillers were to be incorporated in the building automation system.
Chiller operating parameters such as water temperatures, refrigerant pressures, motor current,
and percent of operating capacity were to be monitored and displayed as part of the system's
workstation graphics.
Additionally, control parameters such as chilled water temperature
setpoint and demand limit setpoint were to be adjustable by the workstation operator.

Provides the Solution ...
|
|
The chillers selected for the project were manufactured by York International and were
ordered with the ISN MicroGateway communications option. Upon installation, the ISN
MicroGateway boards were configured for JCI N2 Open protocol, and each chiller was assigned a
unique device address on the bus.
Once
was installed on the Andover workstation PC, the necessary monitoring and control points from
the chillers were brought into the Andover system and were easily incorporated into the graphics,
alarms, and trends configured for the remainder of the system.

|
is Easy to Configure ...
|
|
easily installs as a Windows application on the workstation PC in minutes.
Configuration of the chiller points to be mapped is accomplished just as easily, using
any plain-text file editor (such as Microsoft NotePad).
No programming is required, and system modifications are easily accomodated.
Points can be designated as Read, Write, or Read/Write types to control the
direction of information flow.
And
is fast! For example, the time required to update 12 points from each chiller
is less than 2 seconds per chiller.

Results for this Application ...
|
|
provided a cost effective means to incorporate control and monitoring points from the
chillers without the need for additional sensors and hardwired connections.
Operation of the chillers can now be easily adjusted automatically to respond to the
needs of the building through a single, integrated automation system.
Once their values are brought into the Andover system, points from the chillers can easily
be used in system graphics, schedules, alarms and trends.
The same
program used to interface the chillers can easily be expanded if the RS-485 bus were
extended to other N2 Open Protocol devices such as variable frequency drives for chilled
water pumps or cooling tower fans.
